How We Adapted a Hybrid Surveillance System for –30°C Conditions
A customer in northern Canada needed a remote surveillance system that could operate through winter temperatures as low as –30°C.
Because the equipment would be deployed at a high latitude, limited winter sunlight and reduced battery performance were major concerns. We therefore recommended a hybrid power system combining solar panels, onboard batteries, and a backup generator.
However, standard generators can be difficult to start in extremely cold conditions. To make sure the backup power source remained available when needed, we developed a dedicated cold-weather generator solution.
The Challenge of Starting a Generator at –30°C
At extremely low temperatures, several factors can affect generator startup:
Engine oil becomes thicker
Starting-battery performance decreases
Engine components require more power to turn
Repeated cold-start attempts can drain the battery
A backup generator is only useful if it can start during a power emergency. For this reason, we added a generator preheating system to the surveillance unit.
Battery-Powered Generator Preheating System
The heating system is installed inside the generator compartment and powered by the unit's onboard battery bank.
When the battery level becomes low during extremely cold weather, the customer receives a remote alert on their mobile device. The local operator can then activate the heating system before starting the generator.
The heater raises the temperature inside the generator compartment until the generator reaches a suitable starting temperature. The operator can then start the generator and recharge the system batteries.
This reduces the risk of failed cold starts and helps keep the backup generator available during extended periods of low solar generation.

Automatic Temperature Control
The preheating system includes a thermostatic control switch.
Once the compartment reaches the preset temperature, the heater automatically switches off. This prevents unnecessary energy consumption and ensures that the onboard battery is only used for heating when required.
Additional Cold-Weather Upgrades
In addition to the heating system, we made two further modifications.
Low-Temperature Starting Battery
The original generator battery was replaced with a cold-weather starting battery designed to provide better performance in low temperatures.
This gives the generator more reliable starting power after the compartment has been heated.
Low-Temperature Engine Oil
We also replaced the standard engine oil with low-temperature oil.
Low-temperature engine oil remains more fluid in cold weather, reducing startup resistance and helping the generator start more smoothly.
The Final Cold-Weather Hybrid Solution
The completed system includes:
Solar panels for normal daytime charging
Onboard battery storage
A backup generator
Remote low-battery alerts
A battery-powered generator heating system
Automatic thermostatic control
A cold-weather starting battery
Low-temperature engine oil
With these modifications, the hybrid surveillance system is better prepared for deployment in remote locations where temperatures can fall to approximately –30°C.
This project also reflects our approach to customization. Instead of supplying the same configuration for every location, we adapt the power system according to the customer's climate, operating environment, and reliability requirements.
